Chinchilla Breeding

In these pages of our website, we will go over facts and information related to chinchilla breeding. Hopefully this serves as some useful information for those interested in jumping into this hobby! The first and most important thing to keep in mind if you are interested in breeding is "what are my goals?" For us, our goal is to produce the highest quality, healthy, well adjusted chinchillas to provide the public with a good selection of companions from a reliable and reputable source. Any time you place an intact male into contact with an intact female, this is what is deemed chinchilla breeding. When an intact male has physical access to an intact female, there are no "accidental" litters...males and females reproduce by nature. Whether you are unexpectedly faced with new kits or decisively placing animals into a breeding situation, the information on these pages is geared to help you.

Please note, we do NOT support backyard breeding. Backyard breeding is a term used to designate anyone placing intact males and females in physical contact with each other with no regard for quality, health, or genetic history (pedigrees) and instead are choosing pairings based on color, for the joy of having and selling cute babies, or just with no clear goals. There are many breeders with well established websites that have been around for several years that are classed as backyard breeders. The amount of reputable breeders is quite small for chinchillas in the U.S. and we are all familiar with each other. The primary distinction between a reputable breeder and one who is not can be clearly seen by there support of chinchilla shows. Chinchilla shows serve as an outside quality selection to ensure breeders are continuing to produce animals to high standards of quality and health. Breeders who care that they are producing a quality animal and not just pairing based on personal preferences, will attend shows annually to properly assess the qualities of each generation.
